The Life and Family of John Samuel Goodrich
John Samuel Goodrich, son of William Anderson and Annaliza (Pickard) Goodrich,[1]
was born 9 May 1864 in Glencoe, McLeod, Minnesota, and died 21 May 1935 in
Staples, Todd, Minnesota.[2] He
married Ora P Card in 1888.[3]
Ora was born 4 January 1871 in Nebraska
and died 19 March 1954 in Batavia,
Genesee, New York.[4]
John’s
father William Anderson Goodrich was born 13 January 1825 in Bainbridge,
Chenango, New York.[5] His
mother, Annaliza (Eliza) Pickard, was born about 1826 in New York.[6] His parents married in Bainbridge, Chenango,
New York on 12 April 1846.[7] John spent his childhood on a farm in Penn,
McLeod Minnesota.[8] He had five older brothers[9]
and one younger brother. [10] He was sandwiched between the only two girls
in the family, arriving seventh out of nine children.[11]
[12] His younger brother, two year old, George A.
Goodrich died in 1870 from malignant dysentery.[13]
John’s
parents, William and Eliza Goodrich, homesteaded 160 acres in the southeast
corner of section 10, Penn Township, McLeod County, Minnesota, receiving their
land patent on 15 April 1871.[14]
John’s step-grandmother, Rebecca Tickner,[15]
received her patent for the northwest corner of the same section just eighteen
months later.[16] To meet the homestead requirements, John’s
family would have lived on their land since 1866, working and cultivating the
property.[17] John was about two years old when his parents
began homesteading in Penn, MN. The value
of the family farm was average compared to the surrounding neighbors and annual
production was above average.[18]
The “Estimated value of all farm
productions, including betterment’s and additions to stock”[19]
for John’s childhood farm was $575 compared to the $363 average for the
surrounding farms.[20] The majority of the farms housed two or more
horses. John’s father owned three
horses. This familiarity with horses and
the close proximity of the railroad, which provided freighting opportunities, probably
influenced John’s decision to become a teamster later in life.[21]
Sometime
between 1875 and 1880, the family moved 160 miles north to Thomastown, Wadena,
Minnesota.[22] John (age 17) worked on the family farm and
attended school.[23] The
Northern Pacific Railroad’s mainline ran east to west through Staples just
south of Thomastown.[24]
Due to the railroad’s economic boast and the local lumber industry, nearby Staples
became the largest town in Todd County.[25] A good market for vegetables, small fruit,
dairy and poultry products flourished in Staples providing a market for local
farmers.[26] The railroad offered land grants along the
new tracks in the late 1880 and early 1890s.[27]
Many European settlers flocked to the area.
John’s sister Jenny married Danish immigrant Ole Larson and raised her
family in Thomastown.[28]
John
married Ora “Orry” P. Card in 1888.[29] Orry was just seventeen and John was 23 at
the time of their marriage.[30] Their first daughter Dorothy Madeline
Goodrich (Dora) was born on Christmas Eve 1887 in Dora’s childhood town of
Aldrich, Wadena, Minnesota.[31] They would welcome eight more children into
their family over the next twenty-one years.[32]
The
family lived in Verndale, just five mile northwest of Aldrich, Todd, Minnesota where
their first son (2nd child) William L. Goodrich was born on 13 November
1889.[33]
Five years later, thirty-one year old John worked as a day laborer living with
his wife Orry, daughters Dora (age 7), Pearl (age 3) and two sons Wm (5), and
Henry (2) in Staples Minnesota.[34] The Northern Pacific track ran through Staples
on its way from St. Paul Minnesota to the west coast.[35] Railroad employees made up most of the town’s
population.[36] Local brickyards provided building material
for permanent homes. Churches, hotels,
schools, general stores, millineries, liveries, blacksmith and confectionaries
filled out the expanding town. The lush
forests around Staples provided employment for lumberjacks and teamsters who
hauled the lumber to the trains for transportation to other areas. Staples became known as the “rail hub of the
northwest.”[37]
Many
of the Goodrich’s neighbors worked for the railroad or as skilled artisans
while most of the children attended school.[38]
By 1900, four more children had joined the family: Ralph Edwin (born 1895),
Lillian (born 1897), Olive (born 1898) and Joseph (born 1900).[39] John working as a teamster,[40]
worked long hours driving a team of horses hauling freight.[41] The typical teamster made $2 a day working
seven days a week putting in twelve to eighteen hours each day.[42] A teamster’s day started early in the stables
to water, feed and hitch his horses.
After a long day of hauling, the teamster had to water, feed and groom
the horses before he could get home late into the evening.[43] Since John lived in a railroad town, he
probably hauled lumber or other goods to and from the shipping docks, freight
yards and railroad depots as well as ferrying people around who did not own
their own carriages.[44] At a wage of $2 a day, John’s yearly salary
came in at $672 compared to the local sheriff’s yearly salary of $1,200, the
county jailor received $900 and the courthouse janitor received $540 annually.[45]
The
family moved away from the “big city” of Staples (population 2,258 in 1910) to
the small community of Villard (population 341 in 1910) located in the extreme
northeast section of Todd County and just east of Staples.[46] John farmed in Villard living in a rented
farmhouse.[47] Daughter Dora (age 23) and daughter Pearl
(age 18) were not living at home but William (age 20) and Henry (age 16) were
at home. These two sons did not attend
school during this year, most likely they helped their father on the farm.[48]
Ralph (age 14), Lillian (age 13), Olive (age 8) and Herman (age 6) attended
school.[49]
Their last son, Clarence was just 17
months old. Joseph Goodrich (age 10) was missing from this
census, Orry reported giving birth to nine children with nine still alive[50]
so either Joseph was living somewhere else or the census taker mistakenly left
him off the list.
By
1920, the family was back in Staples living on 5th St where
fifty-five year old John was once again working as a teamster.[51] Orry cared for their two sons, Herman (16) and
Clarence (11) in their rental home.[52] Ten years later, the family had moved back to
Villard to farm.[53] Twenty-one year old Clarence lived with his
parents helping his father farm.[54]
John
Samuel Goodrich passed away 21 May 1935 in Staples, Todd, Minnesota at the age
of seventy-one.[55] He is buried in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery,
Staples, MN.[56] Orry lived for anther nineteen years. In 1937, she was rooming in Batavia, New York
with her son Clarence and his wife Myrtle at 31 Dellinger Ave, in the home of
her son John and daughter-in-law, Georgianna Goodrich.[57] John Henry Goodrich died the next year in New
York.[58]
Clarence, his wife Myrtle and his
widowed sister-in-law Georgia moved from 31 Dillinger in Batavia to 2 School Street
sometime before April 1939. Orry did not
move to this new address with them.[59]
She moved back to Staples Minnesota where the 1940 census records her married son
Clarence is living with her, his wife Myrtle is not mentioned.[60]
A few months later Clarence is back in
Batavia, NY, where he and his wife Myrtle share a house with his widowed
sister-in-law Georgia.[61] Fourteen years later, Orry shows up again in
Batavia (1954) living with her son Clarence and Mrs Georgia Goodrich.[62] Ora passed away 19 March 1954, Batavia, New
York.[63] She was buried next to her husband John
Samuel Goodrich in the Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Staples, MN.[64]

Further Research:
1.
Pearl (b. 1891) and Joseph (b. 1899) are not with
the family on the 1910 Census. Pearl
would have been 18 so she could have been living elsewhere. Joseph would have been 10 or 11, too young to
be living elsewhere unless he happened to be with some relatives. Check cemetery records in and around Villard,
Todd, MN and Staples, Todd, MN for a possible grave for Joseph between 1900 and
1910.

1889. Digital images, Google books. www.books.google.com The available documents show conflicting
birth years for William Anderson Goodrich.
I am guessing he was born in 1825 because his parents married in 1824;
his siblings were born in 1827, 1829, 1831 and 1834. He was married in 1846
(calculated aged 21). According to state
and federal census records, William was born in 1823-1826. His wife was just
slightly younger than he and her calculated birth year through census records
is 1824-1827. He does not have a
headstone but his findagrave.com has a copy of his obituary found in the
newspaper Staples World stating he was 72 when he died in 1894 making his
calculated birth year 1822 which I believe to be incorrect for the above stated
reasons.
